"Here they fight with messers. God help them."
Just finished reading a wonderful book by author KJ Parker called "Sharps". Rather a complexe story, but basically following a group of fencers, coerced into participating in a goodwill diplomatic fencing tournament in a neighboring rival country and all the political intrique that they get caught up in. This character, Suidas Duetzel, is a champion rapier fighter, though he's expert in fighting any hand to hand technique, and of course, as a war "hero", has an extreme case of PTSD that gets activated with this fight against bandits, one using a Gross Messer.
Couldn't have put this book down if I wanted to, great characterization and a beautifully woven plot with so many threads I'll need to read it again. Plus...swords! Rapiers!
Anyway, another book I'd love to be hired to do a illustrated folio edition of. Any comments welcome!
